This weekend saw the 5th anniversary of the death of one my lifelong heroes, Ronnie James Dio. Ronnie is considered by many as being the best vocalist of his generation in the heavy rock/heavy metal genre. I advocated for 30 years that he was the best out there, but he is universally recognised as such now that he has passed.
He is famous for forming Rainbow with former Deep Purple guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, in 1975. Four years later, and after some memorable albums, he joined Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy Osbourne. He recorded more epic tracks, and albums, in a three-year stint before putting together his own band, Dio.
I have loved this man’s voice ever since I first began listening to music. Over the years, I have listened to his albums hundreds, and even thousands, of times. I know every note on every song, and every word uttered from those immortal lips. The images his music evoked in my mind, helped mould the series I have been working on for over twenty years, The Dracula Chronicles. The next book in my series, Book #3, and the real epic of all my books, is named after one of his great collaborations with Ritchie Blackmore, The Gates Of Babylon.
Ronnie, you are sorely missed. Your exceptional talent and your warmth and kindness as a man, has touched millions of people around the world. We will never forget you. May you rest in peace.
