Friday Reflections – The Love Dynamic

Up until now I’ve limited myself on my blog to writing solely about my books, or featuring articles related to vampires or the horror genre. So I’ve decided to use Fridays, wherever possible, for writing about my thoughts on other issues away from books and movies in the horror genre.

So the question on my mind today is: Are men and women meant to co-exist together? I know there is an emotional and, indeed, a physical need for such an attachment. As well as this there is a deeper need and desire to be loved, especially by the one we ourselves love. But how many of us ever have this need properly fulfilled or, on the other hand, how many of us actually manage to fulfil that need in the person who desires it from us?

Interview and Spotlight on The Seraphine Muse Blog 26.11.12

On November 26th 2012, I was featured on The Seraphine Muse blog and interviewed by KaSonndra Leigh. I have posted the interview below.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I’ve been interested in and loved Dracula for as long as I can remember. I used to baby-sit my kid sisters at quite a young age and with my parents out I got to see quite a few of the old Hammer horror movies, and especially those with Christopher Lee as Dracula. And then, at a later age, I discovered the real historical Vlad Dracula.  I always felt it had been my destiny to write, and therefore I wanted to write about Dracula.  But I wanted to do something grandiose with him and epic in scale.  I hope I will achieve that with The Dracula Chronicles series by the time I am finished with it.

EMMA EDWARDS FEATURE

SanguinaryIt is that time of the month again and my guest author for the month of March is my good friend from South Wales, Emma Edwards.  Emma is also a writer of the vampire genre, with two books currently out in her new series, Sanguinary and Imbrued.  Emma is also an advocate for vampire writers so it is wonderful to have her here today.

Would you bleed for the one you love?

Angel Harris has always had a thing about vampires, but not so much the killer that is claiming victims in the city where she lives and works. The press are calling him ‘The Vampire’, because the victims are found drained of blood, with bite marks to their necks.

Ash is the lead singer in a local rock band. Angel is drawn into his world when she is asked by her boss at the local newspaper to investigate rumours of blood drinking within Ash’s band.

Ash and Angel bond on a deep level and she finds herself welcomed into this group of supposed blood drinkers.

But the body count continues to rise and Angel will soon find out that ‘The Vampire’ is closer to her than she ever would have believed. Will the writer survive to tell her story?

Sex, blood and rock n roll.

Interview on Livia Ellis Blog 24.10.2012

This is the first interview I ever did for The Dracula Chronicles on Livia Ellis’ blog on October 24th 2012. As far as I know it has been removed from there, but I have pulled it up from my archives.

“I can say after having read his forthcoming Bound By Blood, that his attention to historical accuracy and detail is no less than remarkable.” – Livia Ellis

1. Did you always want to be an author? If not, what else would you have done?

Yes, from a very early age. From the time I was 8 or 9 years old I felt it was my destiny to become a famous writer. I started writing my first stories and poems around that age. I’ve taken my time to try and make my dreams a reality, but after many years of hard work I’m ready to give it a go. I’m my own worst critic and wasn’t prepared to take that step until I was sure my work was as good as it can be. I never wanted to do anything else in life other than be a writer.

My Top 5 On-Screen Vampires

After a gruelling last week I wanted to do something fun and light-hearted for my blog today. I have decided to post my 5 favourite on-screen vampires. There are so many to choose from and everyone will no doubt have their favourites, but here are mine.

5. Bill Paxton as SeverenSeveren

At #5 I begin with movie legend, Bill Paxton. In 1987 he starred in one of my favourite vampire movies, Near Dark. It surprises me that you don’t hear much about this movie these days, but I was pleased to see it high on the Forbes list of best vampire movies of all time. I like my vampires to be bad, and in this flick Paxton played Severen, who is as bad as they come. Great movie and a great performance from a truly great actor.

April Reign Feature

April ReignIt’s the 3rd Monday of the month, which means it’s that time again. This month my author spotlight falls on the beautiful and talented April M. Reign, who has now given us a dozen offerings in the vampire/horror genre. Her latest book, Dhellia Has A Conscience came out on February 1st. I was fortunate to catch her despite her busy schedule and ask a few questions about her and her new book.

*

She may be the daughter of Satan, but DHELLIA has a conscience. She’s run away from Hell to escape her undesirable duties as princess of the underworld. A three-
month road trip to “upstairs” convinces her half-human side that Earth is where she belongs.

SHANE KP O’NEILL AND THE DRACULA CHRONICLES ON AUTHORSdB

AuthorsdBThis week I’ve been busy with promotional work for The Dracula Chronicles.  I have finally signed up to the website AuthorsdB, which is a resource for authors that looks very similar to the imdb.com website for the movie industry.  I think this is a great innovation for writers and has the great benefit of putting all vital and relevant information about your books, i.e covers, blurb, descriptions, links, reviews, and awards & rankings all on one page.  A great idea and I reckon an excellent promotional tool for the future.  If you read on you will see my page.  Check out the website and the other 300 excellent authors you will find there.

Already on AuthorsdB? Why not drop me a comment on my profile page?

Guest feature: Anthony Hogg Interviews Thomas J Garza

Thomas J GarzaBeing that this blog is dedicated primarily to the horror genre and especially so to the vampire phenomenon, it followed that I might sometimes consult with real experts on the subject. I have a friend, Anthony Hogg, who hosts a fantastic blog and some groups on social media networks. He has a vast wealth of knowledge on vampires, both in folklore and in books and movies. I often find myself staggered by the depth of this knowledge and have asked for his kind permission to share some of his posts and articles for the readers of my blog, who may not otherwise have seen them. Of course, being the guy that he is, he said yes.

The first post I want to share here is an interview Anthony conducted with another leading expert of the genre, Thomas J. Garza, who lectures about vampires at the University of Texas in Austin. From here on it is Anthony speaking…..

I sent a request for an interview and after he agreed, sent a long a bunch of questions. To his credit, he didn’t shy away from the hard stuff, as his responses reveal. Without further ado, heeeeeeeere’s Garza!

Travis Luedke Feature

Travis LuedkeI’m back after a brief hiatus and am beginning 2013 with the January interview. This time out I’m featuring a buddy of mine, Travis Luedke, another very exciting writer in the vampire genre.

Travis is the creator of a new vampire series, Nightlife. It follows the lives of a vampire couple as they move from one city to another around the world. I read the first of the series Nightlife: New York over the Christmas holiday and was very highly impressed.

Vampires, strippers, escorts, night clubs, gangs, pimps and corrupt cops, the Nightlife of New York is never boring.

Is she a beautiful blond guardian angel as he imagined, or something else entirely? When Michelle saves Aaron’s life she shares the benefits of her blood (after getting him shot accidentally). He awakes a changed man, living in a purgatory of eternal night, never to see the sunrise again.

Bound By Blood Chapter 1

Due to a lack of time I will be posting an excerpt from Bound By Blood – Volume 1 on my blog today.  Dracula has just suffered his mortal death at the hands of Lucifer and made the transition from human to vampire.  Now he turns his attention to his people outside where they are praying for him.

You can download more excerpts from Bound by Blood here.

1476 – CHAPTER ONE

Wallachia.  December 1476.  The chapel at Snagov.

Dracula pulled open the door of the chapel.  Relishing his new found strength he ripped it clean off its hinges. He strode out into the night.  All eyes fell on him.  He glared at his people with real menace. They were on their knees in the cold and the rain praying for the repose of his soul.

He laughed at the irony of it. The heady aroma of blood filled his nostrils. The blood of his people. It almost overwhelmed him. He felt the vibration of it in the ground beneath his feet as it pumped through their veins.

The smell of the blood of the dead reached him too. It was a repugnant scent. He realised then that only the blood of the living could satisfy his thirst. That was the price of immortal life. Lucifer warned him if he did not drink he would die. In taking Gabrul he realised that to drink he would have to kill.

Guest feature with Victoria Embers

Victoria Embers Author of My Vampire Lover SeriesOn the second Monday of every month I’ve decided I’m going to feature and interview another Independent author from the horror genre, with a particular bias towards those that write about vampires.  For my December guest I’m delighted to welcome Victoria Embers to the Dracula Chronicles vampire and horror blog.

Victoria has embarked on a new series called My Vampire Lover.  I read the first instalment, Conquest, the other day.  It was a short, but insightful glimpse of what is to come.  The imagery was vivid and powerful and to my liking.  Even though I’m not a fan of vampires and werewolves together, perhaps because this offering is much more adult in content, it was a lot more acceptable to me personally than that which Hollywood has been throwing at us for years.  It will be interesting to see what Victoria follows this opening salvo with.  Part 2, Redemption, is coming soon.

The next big thing

My good friend, Carol Bond, came to me last week and asked if I’d like to participate in a Blog Hop entitled, The Next Big Thing.  For that I’d like to thank her and invite you to check out her very own blog at http://www.theunseenpromise.blogspot.com.au/

Her books, The Tarkeenia Sagas, are coming next year.  I’ll be one of many looking out for and looking forward to those.

The Blog Hop requires me to answer 10 questions about my own recent release, Bound By Blood, which is available in two volumes from Amazon.  All titles can be found there.

Bound By Blood – My Thoughts

With Bound By Blood finally coming out this weekend past, I felt it a fitting time to express my thoughts and feelings on the book, as it is now and while writing it.  Owing to its size I have had to split it into two volumes, but both are available as I write, so the wait is over.

I had so much fun writing this book.  I wrote the first chapters back in November 1992, but didn’t touch it again until September 2006.  With a complete re-write of the original and an extra seventy chapters of the new, Bound By Blood, is a finished product at last.

Bound by Blood Official Launch

In the early hours of Saturday morning, December 1st, the official launch for Bound By Blood took place on Facebook.

It was a really fun event with a great turnout. There was music, discussions and competitions where a lucky few were able to win copies of the book.

You can see what happened by visiting the Facebook Event Page, as well as finding out what people suggested when asked: ‘If there were a film adaption of Bound By Blood, who would you cast as Dracula?’

What do you think, do you agree with the suggestions?

Thanks for those who took part in the event, I hope you enjoyed it.
