RIP SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE (1922-2015)

Lee 1

Nothing makes me sadder than the loss of a creative genius, when a great talent shall add nothing further to a great body of work. Last week on June 7th, we lost one of the great icons of cinema, Sir Christopher Lee.

As Dracula, he fascinated and terrified me at the same time. He brought a presence to the big screen that I have rarely seen emulated. Though those great movies are dated in comparison to that which is produced in the modern era, he brought an anger and intensity to his depiction of Dracula that no one else has since produced. In doing this, he inspired me to embark on my dream and create The Dracula Chronicles and my own unique version of Dracula the vampire.

His passing is desperately sad news for me, with Lee being one of the people I would have liked most to meet in my lifetime. But the legacy he leaves us will transcend death. To me, he is a true immortal.

RONNIE JAMES DIO (1942-2010)

DioThis weekend saw the 5th anniversary of the death of one my lifelong heroes, Ronnie James Dio. Ronnie is considered by many as being the best vocalist of his generation in the heavy rock/heavy metal genre. I advocated for 30 years that he was the best out there, but he is universally recognised as such now that he has passed.

He is famous for forming Rainbow with former Deep Purple guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, in 1975. Four years later, and after some memorable albums, he joined Black Sabbath, replacing Ozzy Osbourne. He recorded more epic tracks, and albums, in a three-year stint before putting together his own band, Dio.

THE NEW EDITION OF BOUND BY BLOOD – OUT TODAY

Bound By Blood coverThe new edition of Bound By Blood is finally on release today.

Bound By Blood was the first of The Dracula Chronicles to be released in December 2012, even though it is Book #6 in the series. It is the first book in the second five-book arc, Bound By Blood, and the book that introduces Dracula the vampire.

I was never fully satisfied with the original and felt I had rushed its release somewhat. So, after another re-write, I sent it away for fresh edits and by the time I had completed the 10th draft of the book, I felt it was polished enough to release anew. This new edition comes complete with a new cover and a new book trailer.

Bound By Blood will be released anew on July 18th and what was previously Bound By Blood – Volume 2, will appear in October/November after a complete overhaul as The Headless Cross.

CHRISTOPH FISCHER – TIME TO LET GO

time-to-let-go-cover-mediumToday I welcome my good friend, Christoph Fischer, to my blog. Christoph has just released his new book, Time To Let Go, a family drama set in rural England.

Blurb:

Time to Let Go is a contemporary family drama set in Britain.
Following a traumatic incident at work Stewardess Hanna Korhonen decides to take time off work and leaves her home in London to spend quality time with her elderly parents in rural England. There she finds that neither can she run away from her problems, nor does her family provide the easy getaway place that she has hoped for. Her mother suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and, while being confronted with the consequences of her issues at work, she and her entire family are forced to reassess their lives.
The book takes a close look at family dynamics and at human nature in a time of a crisis. Their challenges, individual and shared, take the Korhonens on a journey of self-discovery and redemption.

MY REVIEW OF THE EPITAPH OF JONAS BARLOFF by CALVIN DEAN.

Jonas BarloffBlurb

Popular high school senior, Daniel Townsend, is dead – victim of a suspicious car crash. As classmates Marc and Angela investigate, a chance discovery pinpoints Daniel at a crumbling antebellum mansion – the old Jonas Barloff estate

The house looks uninhabitable. Haunted. Evil.

While inspecting the Barloff family cemetery, Marc notices a towering grave marker with a perplexing inscription. What does the epitaph mean, and who is the old man claiming to be Jonas Barloff? To solve the mystery, Marc and Angela must comb through a phantom infested antebellum mansion. Witness a sordid grave exhumation. Attend a wicked, hair-raising séance. And learn the true identity of Jonas Barloff.

Will any of these pieces of the puzzle help them lay the mystery of Daniel’s death to rest once and for all? Oh, no! Not hardly! Not until they come face-to-face with an evil no one could possibly imagine. Even if they live to tell the story, no one will believe them. Not in a million years.

SHANE KP O’NEILL – THE DRACULA CHRONICLES

Author 1EXPERIENCE THE ULTIMATE BATTLE OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL.THE BATTLE FOR SOULS HAS BEGUN.

The Dracula Chronicles is a new and exciting series adding a fresh dimension to the Dracula legend, which combines the real historical Vlad Dracula with a new and different version of Dracula the vampire. The series has been released in two arcs, one that follows Dracula the man and the other following Dracula the vampire. It is written in a style that is both literary and cinematic, that places you there in the thick of the action always.

The books are historical novels of Gothic horror; religious corruption; political intrigue; tragedy; war; dark paranormal fantasy; and deep romance. The premise is built around Creation and the divide in Heaven that results from Lucifer’s jealousy of the creation of man. This leads to the First Great War of the Angels and Lucifer’s eventual expulsion from Heaven with all those who sided with him. The annihilation of the angels continues, but rather than destroy Lucifer, God agrees to a truce. By its terms, Lucifer can contest the soul of every living being as long as he does not interfere with their free will. Should he control more souls than God at any time, he can ascend again to Heaven and cast God and the angels out. He would then have a free hand to destroy all mankind.

Lucifer turns man against God with ease. God responds by sending his prophets one after another to bring man back to the path of righteousness. It seems to be merely delaying the inevitable and in one last effort to thwart Lucifer, God sends his son made man. In giving his life on the Cross, Jesus wipes away man’s sins. This leaves Lucifer back to where he was at the beginning and means he has to start again. The Catholic Church is born on that fateful day in Jerusalem as Christ’s church on the earth. Lucifer then believes if he can destroy this great icon of God, he can turn man against God once more. He searches for over a millennium for the one who can lead his assault on God. The Crusades give him renewed hope, and he is sure the conflict between Christian and Moslem will provide the one he seeks. When this does not materialise, he turns his attention to the Balkan region where this conflict is renewed with Ottoman expansion into eastern Europe. He finally identifies the second son of Vlad Dracul as the one he can manipulate into achieving his ends. God has prepared for this event, and in the very moment that Vlad Dracula draws his first breath, so does another child sired by Dracul, though born to a gypsy woman. This child, Andrei, is blessed by the angels and bestowed with great powers as a balance to the evil about to be unleashed upon the world.

THE 5 GREATEST HORROR MOVIES EVER

Hi everyone.

This week, I’m going to list what I think are the 5 greatest horror movies of all time, or the 5 that had the greatest effect on me of the many hundreds that I have watched.

The Evil Dead5 – The Evil Dead

It’s sad to admit this, but I was already a teenager, though barely, when this movie came out. Although a comedy at times, this remains a classic horror story set on the frequently-used premise used in the 1980’s of teenagers getting cut up or murdered in the woods. The difference here is that it wasn’t a psychopath doing the killing, but an inherent evil released by a book. Any movie that has a “Book of the Dead” is always going to be fun and scary anyway…. But none were as good as this one. The scene at the beginning where one of the girls is attacked and killed by the vegetation is legendary. I recall this movie being banned when it as released on video. That just added to the appeal for us teens. We loved it and I’m pretty sure we all still do.

THE RE-CREATION OF A LEGEND

Christopher Lee 2There are few names in popular culture today as famous as that of Dracula. I would go as far as to say that in the western world, the name conjures up an image of one description or another for anyone who hears it, anyone above the age of twelve at least. For me personally, as a youngster anyway and even now to an extent, I see the face of Christopher Lee, who will always enjoy immortality as the on-screen icon. Of course, the name Dracula is not limited only to western culture.

BLOG HOP

Instead of my usual Friday Reflections blog today, I’m participating in a blog hop from an author group I belong to, known as ASMSG. At the bottom of this post you’ll be able to view all the other great authors participating in this blog hop and, if you check them out, you’ll discover some great writers there. My focus, however, is on Maer Wilson.

INTERVIEW FOR THE ILVN WEBSITE. MARCH 21, 2014

To coincide with the launch of THE PATH TO DECAY, on Friday I gave an interview on the I Love Vampire Novels website. You can see it here.

ILVN. Firstly, tell us about your book/series.

Shane: My series is The Dracula Chronicles. It is a sprawling, expansive new concept that combines the real historical Vlad Dracula and an entirely new version of Dracula the vampire, also based on the real man.

The books are historical novels of Gothic horror; religious corruption; political intrigue; war; tragedy; paranormal fantasy; and deep romance. The premise goes all the way back to Creation, and the First Great War of the Angels, and the concept built around Lucifer trying to ascend again to Heaven through the destruction of the institution of the Catholic Church. As per the truce he agreed with God, Lucifer can contest the soul of any living being, as long as he does not interfere with their free will. Should he control more souls than God at any time, then he can ascend again to Heaven and signal the end for mankind.

I’m currently releasing the books in two arcs. Books #1 to #5 are the Vlad Dracula arc, and set during his real life from 1431 to 1476. This arc re-creates the world of Vlad Dracula in its entirety, with all the great historical characters of that period, all the political machinations, and many of the great battles fought. There are no vampires here, but it is dark and Gothic, with plenty of angels and demons, and a new vision of Hell.

Books #6 to #10 are the vampire, Bound By Blood arc. Here, you will meet Dracula the vampire, as created by Lucifer. He begins life as the instrument to execute Lucifer’s great plan and bring down the Catholic Church, in the hope he can turn man against God and win the battle for souls. In this arc, I bring in a return of the dark, evil vampire. The books encompass many of the greats in history: the Borgias; the Tudors; Machiavelli; Martin Luther; as well as many of the great kings, emperors, and popes of the day.

FRIDAY REFLECTIONS – TRUE LOVE, DOES IT EXIST?

Friday reflections is the part of my blog where I talk about life, or of issues relevant to me, or just generally things I love or like, so that you have a better perspective of who I am.

TRUE LOVE, DOES IT EXIST?

This is one of those burning questions that has undoubtedly crossed all our minds at one point or another, most likely in a time of heartbreak or disillusionment. It is then that we usually question the concept of true love. For sure, in times of great happiness when we have been in a new relationship where we think of that person all the time, where the sex is regular and exciting, and where you cannot get enough of each other, then the question of true love also comes to the fore. I am sure many of us have looked on that new partner, or object of our affection, as our possible true love. Or perhaps we just hope they might be.

REVIEW of THE SECRET LIFE OF LASZLO, COUNT DRACULA by RODERICK ANSCOMBE

countdracula-roderickanscombeThis was a difficult book to review. I was obviously drawn to the title of this book, but confess it has spent quite a few years on my book shelf gathering dust. There are many pluses and minuses to this piece of work, so I’ll work through them the best I can.

Firstly, at face value this was an exciting-looking Gothic horror novel, and I’m sure it was meant to look as such. Gothic it certainly is, which is a plus for me, but a horror it is not. That was an immediate disappointment that became apparent after only an hour or two of reading.

In spite of that, and this book not being what I anticipated it to be, I read on. I loved the 19th Century setting of this book and especially the archaic writing style of Mr Anscombe. That was the real highlight of this work and he has a skill that cannot be disputed.

COVER REVEAL FOR…THE PATH TO DECAY

THE PATH TO DECAYSince the turn of the year, I have split The Dracula Chronicles into two clear arcs, to mark the two different story lines as they occur.

  • Books 1-5 now form the Vlad Dracula arc.
  • Books 6-10 form the Bound By Blood arc.

Therefore, the Vlad Dracula arc follows the story of the real historical Dracula and Lucifer’s manipulation of him. The Bound By Blood arc follows the story of Dracula the vampire on his journey through the ages to destroy the institution of the Catholic Church.
Today, I am delighted to reveal the cover for Book #2 The Path To Decay, which will be available on Amazon from March 20th.

It is 1447. The great Vlad Dracul has fallen in battle. The 16 year-old Vlad Dracula is all alone in the world. With the sultan, Murad II, as his sponsor, he begins his first bid to win the throne that was his father’s.

FRIDAY REFLECTIONS – WAKE UP! YOU’VE BEEN USED!

Friday reflections is the part of my blog where I talk about life, or of issues relevant to me, or just generally things I love or like, so that you have a better perspective of who I am.

This post today was written last year by a very good friend of mine, Maria Carmela Holman. I wanted to share it because it is very relevant to what has happened to me in my life in recent years, and if reading this can help someone else fall into this trap, then it is a worthwhile exercise.
